Our friends at Canine Companions asked us to help them take their blog to the next level by allowing readers to get to know these adorable puppies, and follow along as they go through the rigorous training regimen on their way to becoming certified service dogs.

We started by migrating the posts from WordPress.com to WordPress.org, where we’d have more flexibility and the ability to create custom functionality. Not only did we update the blog to feature these special dogs and their stories, but we also created a landing page where they can highlight specific dogs, and an “About the Dog” page for each dog.

The new functionality is powered by a custom taxonomy with a categories section that lists each dog on each post, categorizes blog posts by dog name, and uses WordPress’ author feature to organize posts about each dog. The organization’s marketing staff can easily add new posts, and categorize them appropriately.

And best of all, supporters can subscribe to “follow” dogs and be notified of new posts related to them, and watch as they grow and learn.

The new blog plays right into the organization’s brand, and is a great revamp to coincide with their new site launch. And as an added bonus, the organization is using the blog to solicit help: Readers are encouraged to submit their own stories of how Canine Companions has impacted their lives, as graduates, volunteers, caretakers, donors, and supporters.
